From July 22 to 29, Capt. Wei Jiafu, President and CEO of COSCO Group, paid a visit to Turkey and Greece. During the visit, Capt. Wei had a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on his trip to Athens, Greece. At the meeting, Capt. Wei briefed Prime Minister Karamanlis on the businesses of COSCO container ships serving Greek ports, christening a new container ship as COSCO HELLAS as well as enhancing partnership with Greek maritime communities. Capt. Wei also expressed that, as the 2nd largest shipping company in terms of total fleet tonnage worldwide, COSCO will make continued efforts to materialize the proposals announced by the leaders of the both governments to strengthen maritime cooperation. Prime Minister Karamanlis expressed his appreciation to Capt. Wei Jiafu for his efforts to promote the cooperation between the two shipping nations and affirmed that Greek government will continue to support an enhanced relationship between Greece and China. Capt. Wei attended the luncheon party organized by Turkish Chamber of Shipping. Capt. Wei exchanged views with Turkish shipping companies and terminal operators, who expressed their wishes to cooperate with COSCO. In his speech, Capt. Wei also expressed interests to cooperate with Turkish counterparts in the development of shipping, terminal operation, logistics, shipbuilding and ship-repairing. COSCO, as one of the world’s leading shipping and logistics group companies, would like to seek with Turkish transportation and business communities more and more cooperation opportunities in liner shipping, terminal investment, shipbuilding and repairing businesses, in terms of mutual beneficiary and win-win principle. A grand reception for thanking COSCO’s local clients in Turkey was held in Istanbul on 25 July, 2006. In a speech made by Capt. Wei at the reception, he briefed the audience about the status of COSCO’s developments, expressing his willingness to further COSCO’s cooperation with the local shipping and industrial sectors of Turkey and to further strengthen the commercial ties of the two countries. Governor Guler appreciated Capt. Wei’s endeavor for promoting the shipping cooperation and economic exchange between Turkey and China. He also introduced the economic development of Istanbul province and the policy toward foreign investment.
