Hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of the major components of the extracellular matrix. HA in the extracellular matrix influences the assembly of the matrix, forming a porous, loose matrix, thereby promoting cell motility. HA on the cell surface not only mediates the initial adhesion of cells to the matrix, but also promotes the partial detachment of cells from the matrix as the cells move. Intracellular HA binds to intracellular HA-binding proteins and signal transduction-related enzymes and acts on the cytoskeleton to regulate cell motility. HA binds to its receptor CD4 4, RHAMM, or Layilin, transducing signals into the cell, altering the configuration of the cytoskeleton and modulating the synthesis and release of proteolytic enzymes involved in cell motility, thereby promoting cell adhesion and movement.
