Dr. Joe R H Zhao, a member of Editorial Board of Paper and Biomaterials, an Adjunct Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering of University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, has been bestowed upon Fellow of Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada (PAPTAC) in the PaperWeek 2018 of PAPTAC in Montreal, Canada, February 5-8, 2018, in recognition of his long-term and significant contribution to PAPTAC and the pulp and paper industry.
Dr. Joe R H Zhao is President & CEO and Chief Scientist of Tri-Y Environmental Research Institute, a company focused on inventions and commercialization of new technologies. Dr. Zhao has made pioneering contributions to pulp and paper, environmental protection, and energy-saving. His major accomplishments include efficient headboxes, fibre flocculation mechanism, twin-wire forming modeling, chemical control agents for contaminants in pulp and paper, high-efficiency flocculants, novel bioreactors for wastewater treatment; novel building materials for releasing and absorbing heat and high thermal resistance panels for insulation to save energy.
Dr. Joe R H Zhao has been working on pulp and paper and related subjects for over 30 years. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1982, master’s degree in 1985, and PhD in 1987 in the Pulp and Paper Engineering at South China Institute of Technology (now South China University of Technology, SCUT).
After completion of his PhD, Dr. Zhao went to Catherine’s College, Oxford University, UK where he was taking training courses of English, applied mathematics, aerodynamics, etc. and worked as a TA. After that, he worked as Research Associate Scientist at Paper Science of University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) (now University of Manchester), UK, under supervision of Dr. John Peel carrying out research on paper calendering.
In 1989, Dr. Zhao came to UBC as a postdoctoral fellow under supervision of Prof. Richard J Kerekes working on fibre flocculation and formation improvement, and then as Scientific Research Engineer on twin-wire forming until 1995. During this time, he was the lead scientist in pioneering work on the development of the first rigorous scientific mathematical model of pressure pulses in twin-wire blade formers. This was the landmark work that explained for the first time how twin-wire blade formers, then in existence for 20 years, created pressure for drainage, called as “Z-K” Theory (“Zhao-Kerekes” Theory). This work was followed by several publications exploring the implications of pressure pulses in creating formation improvement and the influence of wide blades. Dr. Zhao then joined a paper chemical company as Technical Manager from 1995 to 1998 where he focused on pitch control, scale inhibitor and chemical retention aids for pulp and paper industry. Following this, he started an R&D company, Tri-Y Enterprises Ltd. (now Tri-Y Environmental Research Institute) in Canada as VP, Senior Engineer and R&D Manager. He became President & CEO, Chief Scientist, R&D Manager in 2000, and remains so to this day.
Dr. Zhao has made significant contributions of high impact on the pulp and paper industry as a scientist, engineer and educator as well as an inventor-entrepreneur. He has invented several new technologies with initial production in Canada, and saw the inventions through to full commercialization in Canada and China. He invented high-efficiency flocculants and compact high-performance wastewater treatment reactors, which he saw through to commercial production in Canada and China. These developments saved many small pulp and paper mills from closure. Since 2006, Dr. Zhao has devoted his attention to energy-saving innovations, many using natural fibres which are renewable resources. He developed new materials (Temperature Control Materials, TCM) based on phase change compounds that absorb and release heat above and below the human comfort temperature range, for temperature control and energy-saving in buildings. A key component of TCM is the use of natural fibres to support and control nucleation sites. This invention was patented in Canada, US and China, first produced in Canada, and is now mass manufactured in China. More recently, he invented a high-performance thermal insulation panel (High Resistance Panel, HRP) with phononic co-crystals invented which also incorporates significant natural fibres. Manufacturing facilities for this innovation are now in the planning stage in China.
In addition to his leadership of role in Tri-Y Environmental Research Institute, Dr. Zhao has held and holds several other positions in industry, most related to commercialization of his inventions and developments, as well as positions in universities. Dr. Zhao was appointed Distinguished Professor and Honorary Chair, Pulp and Paper, Chemical Engineering of SCUT in 1998, continuing involvement and contribution to pulp and paper with SCUT. He was also appointed Adjunct Professor, Pulp and Paper, Chemical Engineering, Guangxi University in China in 2003, and holds this position to the present. He has supervised 5 postdoctoral fellows, and co-supervised 9 postgraduates and 12 co-op students in pulp and paper and related subjects. Through his research in Canada and manufacturing operations in China, Dr. Zhao has also contributed to building links between the pulp and paper industries of China and North America.
Dr. Zhao was elected as Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry UK in 2015 for his outstanding contributions to the advancement of chemical science.
Dr. Zhao is a registered Professional Engineer of Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (now the Engineers and Geoscientists BC, EGBC) Canada (P. Eng.), a member of the Chemical Institute of Canada, CIC (MCIC), the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE), Forest Stewardship Council Canada (FSC), Canada Green Building Council Canada (CGBC), Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada (PAPTAC), Society of Rheology USA (SOR), Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry USA (TAPPI), American Association for the Advancement of Science USA (AAAS), American Chemical Society USA (ACS), Chartered Chemist of the Royal Society of Chemistry UK (CChem).
Fellow of PAPTAC is to recognize outstanding individuals who have demonstrated a long-term and significant contribution to either PAPTAC, the pulp & paper and forest products industry or the advancement of science and technology in the industry.
