我国古代写砚的诗、文不可胜数,其中以唐代诗人李贺的《杨生青花紫石砚歌》最为著名。在这首诗中,最为人所乐道的诗句是“端州石工巧如神,踏天磨刀割紫云。”“踏天磨刀割紫云”作何解释?清人王琦等据《旧砚谱》云:端石,水中石,其色青;…半石,其色紫;山极顶者,尤润,如猪肝色者佳。唐时端砚取自山顶之龙岩,其下岩水中之石尚未取用。所谓“踏天磨刀割紫云”是登最高山顶而取其紫色之石,一如登天而割紫云。又有吴正子谓踏天乃指水中之天。端岩之下四时水浸,砚工取石皆于水中凿取,故曰踏天。其说似是而非,很难确证。
