日本古称倭奴国,所以中国古代史籍将日本海寇以及后来与之相勾结的中国沿海奸民通称为“倭寇”。自元朝末年到明朝万历年间,中国沿海地区遭受倭寇侵掠达三百年之久,是为倭寇之患。元朝末年,日本进入南北朝分裂时期。到1392年,北朝的足利氏征服了南朝,内战中南朝的残兵败将流亡在海岛上,成为无业的“浪人”。他们勾结九州一带的海盗商人,又利用一部分破产农民,乘元末明初用兵之际,合伙到中国沿海地区来,时而进行走私,时而进行抢劫。至此,倭寇终成一患。
