插花是花枝同一定容器的组合,陈设在室内,使人们得到高度的美感。花枝是插花的素材,花枝通常由花、花柄、叶片、枝梢等组成。花枝有着花数量与疏密的不同,花朵还有花形、花型、花色、香气等的不同特点。花形是区别花卉种类的主要特征,花型是指花朵的大小,花色是仅次于花型的插花特征。在花型不甚悬殊的花枝间,花色便能决定花枝的主次。花的香气在插花上不是主要特征。叶枝在插花上多数作为陪衬花枝使用。选取插花的花枝时,以自然姿态为好。在花枝上花数多而排列紧密的花序,可以作为花朵来处理。
