天津是一座历史文化名城。天津地区早在新石器时代就有先民在此生息繁衍。明弘治四年(1491年)有官吏上书朝廷:“天津之地,水陆咽喉,所系甚重。”优越的地理位置,使津地成为历朝畿辅首邑和我国连接海内外、南北交通的重要枢纽。天津地区的祖先们创造了丰富的文化遗产,形成了天津市特有的津味儿文化。在天津众多的民间艺术中,最具代表性的就是杨柳青木版年画这一民间艺术瑰宝。
