“隋唐燕乐”说认为,隋唐时代产生了一种新的音乐形式,名为“燕乐”。这是一个值得深入探讨的问题。隋统一之前,中国南北分治,由于生态环境与民族文化差异等多种因素,在长期的对峙过程中形成了南北各异的文化圈,音乐文化也同样如此。隋统一南北后,采取综合取舍的文化政策。初唐亦然,音乐文化盖即如此。隋代和唐初的官方音乐是以汉族音乐为基础,广泛取用少数民族音乐(也包括周边国家),因此隋代和唐初的官方音乐特点是杂揉而不是创新。初唐的高宗以后,一直到盛唐之前,基本上是整理,偶有创新,但并不具备创新的时代特征。迨及盛唐特别是天宝年间,才真正谈得上创新——作为一种宫廷音乐的“燕乐”才具有真正意义的新音乐涵义。兹就此问题,略作考察,庶几可见其真。
