The economic costs of controlling pests in agriculture are extremely difficult to measure. Biological threats such as pests and diseases can account for about 40% of global food losses. It is estimated that by 2017, the cost spent on insecticides worldwide will be about 650 billion U.S. dollars. It is also urgent to develop “green” insecticides that target only pests at the same time with minimal harm to beneficial organisms. International groups of scientists, including the Institute of Zoology at the University of Cologne, Germany, are developing new, bio-friendly insecticides to reduce the harmful effects of large numbers of pests on crops. Starting in 2020, the EU’s Research and Innovation Fund will be approved for € 7 million to start research and development of a screened concentrated insect hormone system. The researchers intended to use artificial synthesis
