Since her publication of the semi-autobiographical novel “The Mill on the Floss River”, many scholars have studied it from different perspectives such as feminism, eco-environmentalism and moral analysis , But so far few have interpreted it from a humanitarian perspective. In recent years, the use of humanitarian theory to interpret the classic literature has become a new trend of academic research. In The Mill on the Floss, symbolic means of writing are used to reveal the social background of the novel, the ideology and psychology of the people, and the humanistic thought of George Eliot. This article systematically analyzes the concrete manifestation of George Eliot ’s humanitarianism in this novel from a humanitarian perspective.
