This article describes a new type of ATM optical switch fabric for ATM operation with throughputs greater than 1Tb / s. The proposed structure is based on a vertical surface-emitting electro-optic device (VSTEP). The element can be used as both an optical buffer and an optical routing circuit. The paper also discusses the priority control issues required by self-routed circuits.
