In order to transmit the cable information, Leningrad Institute of Electronics invented the cable attenuation meter. The other college, that is, the Central Research Institute of Posts and Telecommunications developed a cable fault locator. Both of these instruments are manufactured in small quantities by their respective institutes and have been installed on optical fiber communication lines for trial, demonstrating compliance with various technical requirements. The cable attenuation meter consists of two separate instrument units, a transmitter for measuring optical signals and a receiver for displaying the output power of the cable under test. An optical fiber with a core diameter of 50 micrometers is coupled to the transmitter via an adjustable receiving device with a V-shaped recess.
