The results of two consecutive years from 1989 to 1990 showed that the senescence of wheat plants deepened with the decrease of the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and the increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Flag leaf at different stages of the growth of SOD activity showed fluctuations. The activities of SOD and CAT in the flag leaves at the late filling stage were maintained at a slightly higher level, while the activities of the second internode lines at the root and ears were at a very low level. There was a significant negative correlation between the activities of SOD and CAT and the content of malondialdehyde during the aging process, and there was a significant positive correlation between SOD and CAT. Therefore, the activity of SOD and CAT decreased and the lipid peroxidation strengthened was one of the reasons of wheat aging.
