『書』字,从『聿』从『曰』,取其用笔代『说』之意,是动词,即『写』的意思。至于名词的『书』,不过是用笔写话而集中起来形成的一本一本的汇集。所以书写才是『书』字的本意。『写』是个很古的字,在《国语》上面『写』通『泻』,《说文》记载『置物也』,即把东西放在那里,而字写了置放在那里便会留下书写的痕迹。『畫』,或作『畵』,从『田』,原是把田地划开界限之意,是动词,即要标出轮廓界限,便引申出可以描画事物外形的意思。通过画的动作,画出的结果就成为名词之『画』。既是描画事物的外形,势必也要留下痕迹。于是对于『书』和『画』留下的痕迹的研究,对
