On March 14, 2005, when AIG’s nearly 40-year-old chairman and CEO Hank Greenberg was still surfing the coast of Florida, AIG’s independent director Gathered in Manhattan arguing whether to let Greenberg step down. “The board is being manipulated by a group of lawyers who do not know ’insurance,’” a 79-year-old Greenberg called to mock the gangsters, “and you’re going to ruin the company!” While it is this threat Greenberg set an unprecedented authority in 37 years, but this time it does not work. On the same day he was ousted and was forced to resign as chairman of the board two weeks later.
