牌坊与鸟居,分别是中日两国具有代表性的传统建筑形式,都是以门为标志的纪念性建筑。根据相关学者的研究与发现,这两种名称不同,用途迥异的建筑很可能均源自同一建筑形式。而历史的发展与变迁,也渐渐赋予两种同源建筑形式不同的功能与用途。前者既是中国古人为彰表德行,承沐后恩,流芳百世之举,同时也设于寺庙、陵墓、衙署、街道和园林等处,兼有景观功能。而后者主要设立于日本神道教各类大小神社入口。鸟居即供给鸟栖息地木架,意味飞鸟
