Understanding olfactory transduction is a thorny issue. Nakamura and Gold of Yale University School of Medicine reported that fragments of isolated membranes were isolated from olfactory ciliated cells of olfactory receptor cells and that the conductance of ion-conduction was significantly dependent on cGMP or cAMP. It is likely that conductance is the link between the gas-stimulating olfactory cell cyclase and the gas-sensitive current, pointing to a close resemblance between olfaction and visual transduction.
