Digital publishing has become a new-emerging strategic industry new economic increase point of the press and publication area. Either the digitalization of traditional publishing industry or the new-emerging digital publishing industry has presented a surging-forward trend in its development. In 2012, all the member units of China Book International had been actively engaged in the development and innovation of new technologies, and helped connect a relationship between more China’s digital publications and major overseas agencies.
The digital publisher affiliated to Southern Publishing & Media Co., Ltd. has signed a sales agreement with Ingentaconnect Co., Ltd. on the digital copyright of one hundred books of Cantonese version. It also signed a sales agreement with Amazon on the digital publishing of over 2,000 books stored, among which the first set of 268 categories have been put online. Another sales agreement was signed with Apple on 10 versions of 5 digital books. What’s more, Southern Publishing & Media Co., Ltd. has built up business connections with Science and Technology Co., Ltd. (UK), Printing On Demand (U.S.) and Indian Science and Technology Co., Ltd. and other publishers overseas in digital publishing area.
Taking the content resource of paper books as the prior point of penetration, Jiangsu Phoenix Publishing&Media Corp. Ltd. turned some popular literary works on domestic book market into digital applications and put them online through Apple Store. It had quite high downloads and brought good profits. In comparison with traditional papery copyright trade, this new method enables more books to be seen by overseas readers and helps create a better marketing effect though it needs quite high investment at an early stage. It also brings a bigger increase in copyright output amount and help realize scale operation of it.
Xinhua Winshare Publishing and Media Co., Ltd. signed an agreement with Cengage Learning on their strategic cooperation. The highlights at the first stage is to make full use of Cengage Learning’s digital reference platform - Cengage-Gale Virtual Reference Library, realize the export of Sichuan’s digital books and their copyrights and provide the overseas readers with rich and authentic books that reflect the real development of China in its economy, society and culture.
Jiangxi Provincial Publishing Group has the digital copyrights of nine books exported to the US, and digital copyrights of other five books to Japan. With two years’ preparation, the online youth inspirational game Magic Wonderland which was developed by 21st Century Publishing House on the basis of the award-winner of "Five-one Project Award" – The Magic Fairy has now been put online. Its copyright has been purchased by some online publishers in South American area such as Brazil and Argentine, which has brought it an initial income of USD 500,000.
