For a simple sharp edge orifice, the throttle area is only a circular area. However, for the needle valve and poppet valve, throttle area is not so easy to determine. In fact, two different definitions of throttling area are often proposed in the literature, but none have calculated the true minimum throttling area. This led to the flow calculation error.
