Although most of these leaders are foil, they play a decisive role in understanding work and Hawthorne. By providing relevant historical contexts of Puritanism, this article aims to show how Hawthorne consciously replaced, pieced together and manipulated historical facts and characters’ fate and expressed his exclusion of radicalism. On the other hand, having felt the detail of Hester as Winslow’s guarding spirit and combining with the social crisis in Hawthorne’s era, this article also analyzes the significance of Winslow’s idea and action, Beliefs and the holding of a conservative ideology of gradualism.
