According to a survey conducted by Japan's government banking institutions in more than 500 companies in the second half of 2001, many companies indicated their intention to invest overseas in order to increase their competitiveness in the region, with investment in China a top priority. According to Professor Purajima Jiro, a professor of social sciences at Waseda University in Japan, pointed out in “The Regional Prospects Forum 2002” that Japan's economic performance this year is expected to shrink as it was last year and will also affect the development of domestic enterprises. To reduce costs, Japanese companies feel the need to move their production lines to other countries, mainly Asia.
