Large-size UV imaging sensors have been successfully developed and are being actively developed for use in a variety of spaceborne astronomical missions. Historically, such a detector has been one of the hardest parts of any astronaut spacecraft and has played a decisive role in the overall performance of the instrument. There are many detector systems now, but for all applications no system is perfect. This article focuses on the inherent strengths and weaknesses of the few important UV imaging sensors, discusses their recent state of the art, and advances in technology improve the performance of these devices.
