It is generally believed that steroid hormones bind to receptors within the target cytoplasm to form a complex with a high degree of nuclear affinity and then enter the nucleus to alter the gene expression to produce a biological effect. Estrogen (E) dimerizes (or binds to) another 4S receptor in the cytoplasm of the target cell (MW75,000) to form a 5S estradiol binding protein with high affinity to the nucleus ( MW14 million); this process depends not only on E but also on temperature. Usually this receptor and a low molecular weight inhibitory protein combination, it is converted from 4S 5S process and dephosphorylation.
