The U.S. military’s global system for deep ocean monitoring was established during the Cold War, consisting of countless underwater microphones and 55,000 kilometers of submarine cables laid on various oceans. Underwater heaters not only record underwater engine noise, but also record submarine earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and whales’ voices. Americans rely on the system to track the tracks of the Soviet underwater and naval vessels. At present, the world tensions have slowed down and the military decides on a decisive basis to provide experts and scholars with the information collected by this costly system.
