The arrangement of first marriage is an important event to understand the development of family form and structure. The existing resource determinism perspective mainly explores the impact of individual absolute resources on housing arrangements, but lacks a systematic study of the intergenerational differences in resource effectiveness. Based on the data from Shanghai Household Survey (SHFS2010), this paper finds that the first marriage arrangements of urban families in China are not completely controlled by the status of husband and wife, but more restricted by the social and economic status of the original families. After Bayesian multi-padding method to deal with the data, the results further support intergenerational income flow has a decisive effect on the first marriage living arrangements.
