Recently, Intel researchers have developed the world's fastest silicon transistors, proving once again that the applicability of Moore's Law there is no fundamental obstacle in the next 10 years. These newly developed 20-nm transistors will enable Intel to make a microprocessor with nearly 1 billion transistors around 2007, operating at speeds approaching 20 GHz and operating at voltages below 1V. Researchers at Intel Labs released the news at the 2001 Silicon Nano-electronics Workshop in Tokyo, Japan, June 13th. Developed by Intel lab researchers, these transistors are only 20nm in size, 30% smaller and 25% faster than Intel's fastest-ever transistor in the industry released last year (Note: nm equals one billionth of a meter). The smaller the transistor, the faster it is, and the fast transistor is the key building block for a fast microprocessor, which is the “brain” of computers and many other smart devices. These transistors will be Intel's 0.045μm
