从明万历年间开始,折子戏演出进入兴盛时代,这一演剧形式成为具有独立品格的艺术样式约在万历中期。传奇体制冗长拖沓、结构松散,是折子戏形成的根本原因。折子戏是长篇传奇在剧场演出中解体成的碎片,彰显出传奇体制存在重大缺陷。整本戏中的折出从“母体”脱离出来成为折子戏,既有很大随机性,也受必然因素影响。明清两代观众欣赏折子戏的趣味较为相似;不同层次观众对于不同折出各有偏好。昆山腔系统折子戏接近原作或通行本,非昆山腔系统折子戏对原作或通行本有明显改动。
