应氏杯世界围棋锦标赛,是由已故台湾著名企业家应昌期先生个人出资赞助的比赛。应氏杯的比赛规则是独具一格的:使用经过应昌期改良的应氏棋具,采用以计点制为主的应氏规则。并且,比赛和奥运会同年举行,每四年一届(应昌期曾设想,将来围棋会进入奥运会,所以才在时间上这样设计)。应氏杯的冠军奖金高达40万美元,是所有围棋世界比赛中奖金最高的。 首届比赛于1988年8月开赛,富士通杯也是在这一年举行的,所以,1988年被人们称为“世界围棋元年”。 已经举行的四届应氏杯无疑成了中国棋迷心中永远的痛:韩国四大天王宿命般地轮流坐庄,让我们一次又一次地黯然神伤。
