19世纪中叶至20世纪初期,大量的传教士和外交官等涌入中国,这些来华西方人士为了顺利地在中国开展相关活动,切实加强了对汉语的学习。来华西方人士的汉语学习,其加重了近代历史上中国作为半殖民地半封建社会的被奴役和被侵犯的程度,其给中国人民带来的危害之处是显而易见的。与此同时,该时期来华西方人士汉语学习也具有相应的积极影响,有力地促进了中西方文化的交流和促进了汉学的发展。因而,探究该时期来华西方人士的汉语学习活动,是中国近现代史上不可或缺的重要环节和对外汉语传播、研究和教学中的重要课题。
From the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, a large number of missionaries and diplomats infiltrated China. These western Chinese people practically strengthened their study of Chinese in order to carry out their activities smoothly in China. Chinese learning by Western Chinese exacerbates the extent to which China has been enslaved and violated as a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society in modern history. The harm caused to the Chinese people is obvious. At the same time, Chinese learning by Western Chinese in this period also had a corresponding positive impact, effectively promoting the exchange of Chinese and Western cultures and promoting the development of Sinology. Thus, it is an indispensable important link in the modern history of China and an important issue in the dissemination, study and teaching of Chinese as a foreign language to explore the Chinese learning activities of Western Chinese in this period.
