The success of the novel and drama on the screen is undoubtedly an irresistible temptation. With this temptation comes an ongoing debate on how to adapt. Laszlo Bernardik advocated some kind of organic expansion of the play, but insisted that the integrity of the original should be preserved first and foremost. Richard Brooks (1912) thought that if it were to succeed on the screen, the entire book, even the finest literary works, including himself, had to be completely altered according to the demands of the film. His novel “Brick Shelter” was adapted by Dole-Shali into a film “Cross Fire”, a major example here, and he states with all hesitation how to erase certain chapters entirely to suit the demands of the film. However, the shooting of “Cross Fire Network” at that time had caused a fierce debate. The debate did not involve the compression of materials, but rather because the protagonist turned from homosexual to Jewish after the adaptation. When Brooks claimed that the critic’s response to the change was “almost in agreement,” he did not completely tell the truth. In addition, he asserted that the change had little bearing on the film and was not convincing - especially from the social perspective of 1948. Brooks directed his first film Crisis in 1950. Many of the most important films he directed were based on theatrical or literary compositions (often written by himself), most notably “ Kalamazoo Brothers, ”“ Elmer Gantley, ”“ Lord Jim, ”and“ Cruelty. ” For these works, Brooks has used his theory: "a good novel without any decision to change?
