A Tricky Invitation
同学之间应该团结友爱,相互帮助。搞恶作剧取笑别人会有什么后果,你知道吗?这篇短文会告诉你的!
Jess really felt very happy. When he arrived at his seat in the classroom that morning,he found an invitation(请帖) on his desk. It was from several classmates of his asking him to join them on a camping trip(野营). This was the first time he had been asked to join in an out-of-school activity. Why were they asking him to join them now? Nobody seemed to like him. In fact,he had been so lonely that he drowned his feeling with food. As a result,he had put on a lot of weight(重量),and this gave the kids something more to make fun of him.
Cindy, who was standing near Jess when he read the invitation, went out quickly to tell others that the trick(戏弄) had worked. Everyone was pleased that Jess thought that was true. But there was no camping trip. The whole thing was made up.
At first,Cindy thought it was fun. But later, when Jess told her that he was going to buy a sleeping bag with his savings,Cindy had second thoughts. She knew that Jess’ s family had little money, and she hated to see him spend his savings on something he would never use. Cindy also hated to tell Jess the truth. Her close friends would be angry with her.

Spiders,Man’s Friends
蜘蛛的捕食能力很强,胃口很大,从不满足一日三餐的生活。那么它们的捕食量究竟有大呢?
People are afraid of spiders(蜘蛛). They look terrible and hurt people sometimes. But most spiders can help man. They are man’s friends.
You may ask,“Why should spiders be our friends?”
Some insects(昆虫) are the greatest enemies(敌人) of us. We say so because they eat our plants, and maybe they can even kill our sheep and horses.
We should thank birds and other animals that can kill and eat insects, but they can kill only a small number of harmful insects. Spiders eat many harmful inseets every day. Spiders are good at eating insects and they can kill a lot for each meal. They never do any harm to people and their plants. They hurt people sometimes because they think people are trying to hunt them.
How many insects can a spider kill each day? This question is hard to answer, but we know they are hungry all the time. Three meals a day are not enough for spiders. The weight of all insects eaten by spiders in England in one year would be as much as the weight of all the people there.
