At a time when the U.S. government declared war on drugs in its entirety, Siegel, the famous psychotropic scholar in the United States, published a book titled “Pursuing a Man-made Homeland”, asserting that the anti-drug war could not escape the doom. Siegel’s argument is that the anti-drug movement runs counter to the natural human nature. He believes that mankind is pursuing pleasure through drugs. This is an unavoidable fact. People constantly change their state of consciousness from time to time, a desire that is just as natural and unquenchable as a person’s appetite and desire. Siegel advocated that the whole society admit that people need to be self-absorbed. He advocated the development of a harmless, non-toxic and non-addictive drug to replace the prevailing drugs. With such substitutes, the social order would be much better, since such substitutes would bring both pleasure and excitement without overspending. Although Siegel’s book was just launched, it was opposed and attacked by conservatives and people who fight bitterly against drugs, but his view was actually endorsed by some authorities. Greenspan, a Harvard psychiatrist who has written extensively on drugs, says that it is both a necessity and an internal drive for human beings to change their state of mind from time to time.
