An instrument for measuring the absolute direction of a geomagnetic field was studied. It consisted of a cylinder with a radial bore and was rotated about its axis by an air bearing. The effect of this device is similar to that of a single-turn coil in that a current flows through the cylinder due to misalignment between the axis of rotation and the direction of the total magnetic field. This current is detected by a directional quadrature coil attached to the instrument frame. This signal is phase-sensitized and fed back to the Helmholtz coil to counteract the micro-magnetic field to create misalignments. The vector magnetometer, when used in conjunction with an absolute scalar instrument, provides complete and continuous absolute vector information and can be used as a standard observation instrument.
