Tsinghua University Press promotes branding and internationalization through rights trade

  Tsinghua University Press, a country-level press, “advanced publishing unit won The Chinese Government Award for Publishing”, “National Top 100 Publishing Units”, “advanced unit of national key publishing project in the Eleventh Five-year Plan”, publishes over 8,000 kinds of books (including reprints) annually, with an annual total trading amount of RMB 1.1 billion. The Press, with the goal of “becoming a world-class university press group”, respects intellectual property, emphasizes on rights protection, actively carries out rights trades, and adopts a series of innovative measures in such aspects as rights creation, utilization, protection, management and dissemination, through which it has won remarkable achievements and exerted a wide range of influences.
  Wide brand awareness of Tsinghua books
  Zong Junfeng, president of Tsinghua University Press, guides the Press to utilize the comprehensive advantages of Tsinghua University to build the gold-lettered signboard of “Tsinghua version” in multiple fields. He requires the press to publish multidisciplinary and multilevel books and to create distinctive brand characteristics. As for teaching materials, the press has published books on fields as computer & information, science & engineering, economics & management, humanities & social sciences, foreign languages and vocational education, forming a complete teaching material system; among which the publication of books about humanities & social sciences increases markedly while that of high-end academic works develops in an internationalization level. This facilitates the press to be one of the key partners of tens of international education, science and technology publishing houses and to keep pace with the international standard.
  From 2010 to 2013, Tsinghua University Press had published 243 kinds of books and periodicals, many of which had won national and provincial awards. 61 publishing projects of them had won a national and Beijing Municipal fund of totally over RMB 20 million. The press also has won the High-quality Publication Award of the Printing Branch of Beijing Printing Quality Association in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. In 2013, Real Rights: Standard and Theory, together with other three books and periodicals, published by Tsinghua University Press, won the 3rd Chinese Government Award for Publishing.
  In recent years, Tsinghua University Press has been engaged in the three-dimensional development of copyrights. It comprehensively makes use of digital technologies, expands copyrights value-added services, and improves copyrights quality to achieve in-depth integration of contents and platforms. Besides, it devotes itself to the digitization of education publishing as well as that of specialized and mass publishing. For example, in the aspect of the digitization of education publishing, it develops such products as interactive digital textbooks, intelligent question bank, multi-media courseware and scientific animations, which, together with the independently developed intelligent digital teaching service platform, provides all-around digital solutions for teaching. In 2013, its intelligent digital teaching service platform won the special fund for culture industry subsidized by the Ministry of Finance. The technology of this platform has reached the international advanced level and part of its technology was applied by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for being authorized to be used on edX, the largest MOOC platform in the world. New Era Nteractive English, established in 2003, sets a precedent in platform, three-dimensional and multi-media digital publishing. The book was used in over 200 colleges and universities, with a net trading amount of over RMB 0.3 billion and has won many awards as the first prize of National Teaching Achievement, and “Excellent Work of 2007 Digital Publishing” of the Second Chinese Digital Publish Exposition. In addition, in the aspect of the digitization of specialized and mass publishing, the press has achieved digital production and marketing for all types of books and developed multiple publishing channels as phone and mobile terminals with the wqbook-based e-book sales and promotion.   Enhancing the depth and width of rights utilization
  Since 1990s, Tsinghua University Press has successively established friendly cooperative relationships with many world-known publishing companies. At the early stage of rights business, the press was mainly engaged in translating, introducing and disseminating the excellent scientific and cultural knowledge in the world. During that period of time, Tsinghua University Press took the lead in publishing a series of introduced books about computers and economics & management to supplement and enrich the contents of its publications, which not only built the press a favorable brand image among readers but also brought it with good economic benefits.
  At present, copyrights introduction is still an effective measure for Tsinghua University Press to strengthen international exchange, expand overseas channels and promote culture prosperity. Meanwhile, the press also focuses on overseas market, positively exploits excellent writer resources at home and abroad and organizes to publish excellent English original academic monographs and textbooks for higher education.
  From 2007 to 2009, Tsinghua University Press totally exported 74 rightss; while from 2010 to 2013, it totally exported 349 rightss. The amount of rightss exported increases remarkably and led the rest individual publishing houses.
  Tsinghua University Press promotes its operation and management of existing rights resources with the policy of “going global”. Over the years, depending on advantaged resources of Tsinghua University, it fosters and accumulates many book products integrating systematicness, theoretical property, advancement and scale, forming the unique spiritual culture “treasury” of Tsinghua University. Zong Junfeng emphasizes that the Press shall pay attention to the selection of international cooperative partners and chooses those world-known publishing agencies that are multiple in channels, good in reputation, reliable in sincerity, great in influence and favorable in brand communication so as to complement each other's advantages. Based on the long-term and stable cooperation with such well-known publishing houses as Springer, John Wiley & Sons Inc., Elsevier, Cengage Learning, the Press continuously strengthens investigation and survey on international market and keeps expanding rights export channels. In recent years, Tsinghua University Press successively established strategic partnership with Taylor & Francis Group, De Gruyter, and World Scientific Publishing Company. It flexibly adjusts and innovates in cooperation models according to changes in book markets at home and abroad and prudently promotes brand book internalization in accordance with plans and actual effects. The cooperation models are authorized publication, joint investment, risk sharing, and benefits sharing in both paper publications and digital publications, striving to occupy the global market as much as possible and maximize the benefits of the existing rights resources.   Tsinghua University Press gives equal consideration to the benefits of the cooperative partners and the copyrights owners, which brings the press a large batch of high-end writers and international publishing talents. More and more substantial overseas publishers come to seek for cooperation, which not only expands the scale of Tsinghua University Press for “going global” but also protects and stimulates writers’ enthusiasm in re-creating.
  At the same time, to propel the enterprise truly go global together with its cultural products, Tsinghua University Press solicits contributions, zero-distance service, in “North American Agency” located in America, directly facing readers in North America, and is trying to further expand its overseas cooperation and international marketing channels.

  Zong Junfeng, researcher of Tsinghua University and president of Tsinghua University Press, assumes the posts of director general of China University Presses Association, deputy director of Science & Technology Publishing Committee of The Publishers Association of China, managing director of The Publishers Association of China, managing director of Copyrights Society of China. In June 2010, he was rated as the “2010-2012 Leading Talent in Beijing Press and Publishing Industry”; Journal of Tsinghua University (science and technology, Chinese edition), in which he holds the position of director of editorial department, won journal award nomination of the Chinese Government Award for Publishing in successively two sessions.
