The design of a new solid-state control element greatly enhances and relaxes the functionality of controls in the X-band to millimeter-wave band. Its main feature is a high power, wide frequency band, small loss and other characteristics. The design utilizes a monolithic PIN diode array mounted on a waveguide to achieve better performance than previously planned. PIN diodes are arrayed in parallel or in series to form an electronically controlled, windowed switch of RF energy using DC voltage. In the Ka band, SPST switches designed with a windowed array (WINAR) typically have 0.6dB insertion loss and 22dB of insulation in the 26.5 to 40.0GHz band. This switch has a peak power of more than 500W and an average power of 25W.
