There have always been two tendencies in the history of Western painting, a kind of rational spirit, and one kind of emphasis on emotional expression. The former is mainly characterized by the portrayal of still images, while the latter is characterized by the expression of emotions. Both of these tendencies are reflected both in traditional painting and in modern painting. In each of these tendencies, the works subdivided into different historical periods are in some ways connected. Two kinds of tendencies and self-contained system together make up two major contexts in the history of painting that are mutually antagonistic and mutually co-exist. This essay deals with the artist’s expression of emotion in a class of paintings that focus on emotional communication.
