Researchers at the National Cancer Institute have isolated immunosuppressive compounds from the urine of pregnant women. Bethesda’s chemist names the compound Uromodulin, a compound that may have the effect of preventing placenta and fetus rejection. Half of the placenta inheritance comes from the father. In fact, the placenta is a graft, and the mother does not repel the placenta just as rejection of the transplant lung or kidney. There is no scientific explanation for this acceptance of the graft, but the researchers made some speculation. Different biochemicals have been isolated from the urine of pregnant women and considered to be immunosuppressive substances that inhibit maternal rejection, but none of the immunosuppressants have stood the test of time.
