Objective To investigate the changes of cerebrospinal fluid nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and to explore the role and relationship between NO and ET-1 in HIE. Methods The levels of NO and ET-1 in cerebrospinal fluid of 24 children with HIE were detected and compared with 8 control subjects. Results The levels of NO and ET-1 in cerebrospinal fluid of children with HIE were significantly higher than those of control (P <0.05). The levels of NO and ET-1 in cerebrospinal fluid of children with moderate and severe HIE were significantly higher than those of mild HIE (P <0.05) Cerebral spinal fluid ET-1 levels were significantly higher in patients with abnormal brain CT than those with normal CT (P <0.01). Conclusions NO and ET-1 are involved in the pathophysiological process of neonatal HIE. Cerebrospinal fluid NO and ET-1 are important indicators of brain parenchymal injury
