《仪礼》十七篇,《丧服》今本列在第十一篇。《丧服》实际包括经、传、记三部分。《仪礼》十七篇唯《丧服》有传。据唐石经及释文,汉、唐时称《丧服》为《丧服经传》。《丧服》是讲丧礼的服制的。古人最重丧祭,但如《丧服》所记录的丧服制度的形成,应是周代的事。《丧服》以士、大夫为主,旁及诸侯、天子;以男子为主,旁及妇人。研究《丧服》不但可以追寻氏族社会的遗踪,更主要的是可以了解周代的亲亲、尊尊、长长、男女有别的等级社会制度。
