A Conor Grennan was unwilling to be a volunteer (志愿者). The 29-year-old American was not sure if he had the skills or a strong feeling for it.
However, he went to work at an orphanage (孤儿院) in Nepal. His first thought was to make people impressed.
“I thought that if I volunteered just once. I could retell the story over and over again,” Grennan said in a Huffington Post article.
However, his three-month stay in the orphanage turned into an unusual experience. It was 2004 and Grennan had given up his job to begin a year-long around-the-world trip. His first three months were spent in Nepal.
When he arrived in the village, he knew nothing about the children or the local culture. When he opened the gate of the Little Princes Children’s Home, he was faced by the excited children.
The young American ended up caring for 18 children. He later discovered that they were trafficked (被拐卖的) children. So he walked through the mountains with great difficulty to find the kids’ families. “I started walking with photos of the kids.” he told the Reuters reporter.” “I would show up in villages and show photographs around. I went with 24 photos, and I found 24 families.”
At the same time, he put his heart into Nepalese culture.
Grennan said, “Volunteering is the single best way to see how the rest of the world lives.”

When my family moved to America from China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should respect the elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my first embarrassment (难堪) in the USA.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I served their food quickly because I respect the elderly. Then her face showed displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, gave me a long lecture about how sensitive (敏感的) Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”. I then apologized to the wife. After she heard my reason, she understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so she laughed and was no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. There are not so many people who live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they can learn from their experience.
However, in the USA, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises. When I told the couple that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.
  36. Jack brought the couple their food very fast because ____ .
  A. the manager asked him to do so

  C. he respected the elderly
  D. he wanted more pay
  37. When Jack called the couple “elderly”, they became ____ .

  38. In the writer’s hometown, ____ .
  A. people are proud of being old
  B. people dislike being called the old
  C. many people reach the age of seventy or eighty
  D. the elderly are the first to get food in restaurants
  39. After this experience, the writer ____ .
  A. lost his job in the restaurant
  B. made friends with the couple C. no longer respected the elderly
  D. changed his way with the elderly
  40. Which of the following is TRUE?
  A. The writer wanted to show his feelings through words after his experience.
  B. The manager went back to the table and apologized to the couple.
  C. From this experience, Jack learned more about American culture.
  D. The more the writer explained, the angrier the couple got.

1979 was World Conservation (自然保护) Year. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world is in danger. They hoped that governments would go into action (行动) quickly in order to conserve nature. Here is one example of the problems. At one time there were 1,300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 860 remain. The others have been destroyed by human beings and their technology (技术). We are changing the earth, the air and the water, and everything that grows and lives. We can’t live without these plants. If we continue like this, we will destroy ourselves.
What will happen in the future? Perhaps it is more important to ask “What must we do now?” The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today. A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant trees in forests, build bridges across rivers, and so on. In a small town in the United States a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometers of their river. Young people may hear about conversation through a record called “No one’s going to change our world.” It was made by the Beatles, Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve wild animals.

  Do as the Romans Do
The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plates as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I don’t want to, because it is considered bad manners in the East to leave one’s food on the plate. I have already noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he very often refuses the offer of food or drink though he is in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China, but it is not in the West at all. In the United States, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No, thanks.” When an American is fed with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I’ll take some diet, Cola if you have it.” That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States, you had better remember the famous saying: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
  46. From the passage, we can know that the Chinese are usually very ____ to the guests.
  A. hot B. rude
  C. impolite D. cold
  47. If a foreigner has dinner with a Chinese host, he may feel ____ .
  A. pleasant B. uncomfortable
  C. satisfied D. happy
  48. Why does a Chinese often refuse the offer of food or drink at a dinner party?
  A. He is shy.
  B. He has had enough.
  C. He thinks it’s polite to do that.
  D. He is afraid that others will laugh at him.
  49. When an American wants something to eat or drink at a dinner, he will ____ .
  A. take them by himself B. ask for it directly
  C. refuse the offer D. empty them
  50. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” probably means “____”.
  A. When you are in a new country, you should do as the locals do
  B. When you stay in Rome, you should do as the Romans do
  C. When you got to Rome, you should act as the Romans do
  D. Romans can be an example for you
