Geneticist Charles W. Stuber uses isotope-labeled maize genes to track the path to new maize varieties. He said that the precise control of genes that control a trait is to determine if those genes are passed on to their offspring through their parents. This research can shorten the time to create new maize varieties from an average of 10 years to 4 to 5 years.
