Automotive engine camshafts are generally made of chilled cast iron. However, due to the increasing demand for high performance, low maintenance, and low fuel consumption of engines, the camshafts need to be made lighter and more durable to meet these requirements, whereas cast iron camshafts can hardly achieve this. In order to solve these problems, a sintered integrated camshaft has been developed. It is mainly composed of excellent wear-resistant sintered alloy cam and lighter weight steel pipe. This camshaft, Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation began mass production in 1981 and was used on the new 1S engine with a displacement of 1.8 liters. Its main advantages are: (1) light weight; (3) improved lubrication system; (2) wear resistance is very good; (4) saving machining costs.
