一九三一年,巴金仅用了一个多星期的时间,就译完了匈牙利现代诗人兼小说家尤利·巴基(Julio Baghy)的中篇小说《秋天里的春天》(Printempoen la autuno)。翌年春天,巴金曾到福建晋江一次,在那里为一个因婚姻不自由而发疯的少女的故事所激动,回到上海后就一口气写成了中篇小说《春天里的秋天》,当年七月,与《秋天里的春天》同时出版。这两部小说的题目,都具有抒情气息和象征意义。从表面上看来,两者的含义正好相反,但实际上它所反映的内容都带有悲剧性质。《秋天里的春天》描写了两个拾得的孩子的遇合及其不得不分离的痛苦,《春天里的秋天》则更是“一个温和地哭泣的故事”,抒写了在封建专制家庭摧残下一对青年男女的爱情悲剧。从作品的思想倾向来看,《春天里的秋天》显然较《秋天里的春天》进步,但在书名的确定和某些艺术手法上,《春天里的秋天》又受《秋天里的春天》的影响。
In 1931, in just over a week, Pugin translated Printempoen la autuno, a novel by Hungarian modern poet and novelist Julio Baghy. The following spring, Ba Jin once went to Jinjiang, Fujian Province, where he was excited about the story of a girl who was mad because of marital freedom. After returning to Shanghai, she wrote a novel “Autumn in Spring” in one breath and in July of that year, Published with Spring in the Fall.
