Heterotopic tracheal transplantation (HTT) using a heterologous pathophysiological Fischer-344 rat for allogeneic transplantation has been used in respiratory toxicology and oncology studies. HTT has the unique advantage of establishing “in-vitro” experimental systems in particular in conjunction with in vitro cell culture. The system is thought to bridge the overall body of research on carcinogenesis of the respiratory tract and cellular molecular levels.
