This article describes a phenomenon found during the transfer alignment of a strapdown inertial navigation system in flight. This phenomenon, which has never been reported in the previous literature, is the pseudo-longitudinal accelerometer bias estimate produced by a Kalman filter used in the alignment. This article points out the causes of this phenomenon and makes a theoretical analysis. It is evident from the analysis that the phenomenon of this pseudo-longitudinal accelerometer bias estimation occurs only in the strapdown inertial navigation system and not in the platform-based inertial navigation system. A true covariance simulation was performed, which confirmed the analysis and gave a better understanding of the mechanism of pseudo-bias. Eliminating the cause of the phenomenon eliminates the false bias estimate, which concludes with the correct interpretation.
