Unconventional natural gas production from tight gas sands is of great importance to known gas reserves. However, the characteristics of reservoirs and difficulties in estimating production capacity have hindered the economic benefits of such resource development. Conventional log analysis methods based on pure sandstone with high porosity and permeability often do not accurately reflect the characteristics of tight gas-bearing sandstones. In an attempt to improve log interpretation, the Institute of Natural Gas funded the first key step in the search for log interpretation of tight gas sands and conducted the study. Comparisons of log data and core analysis data for a large number of typical tight gas sands in many parts of the United States confirm that conventional log interpretation and its assumptions are not applicable. This article is the summary of this research report. The main logging interpretation parameters to be discussed in this article are: porosity, framework, clay content, formation water resistivity, water saturation, and permeability.
