Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of structural and functional homologues of zinc-dependent proteases that specifically degrade the extracellular matrix (ECM) and are expressed by matrix metalloproteinase Inhibitors (tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases, TIMPs) specific inhibition. In the physiological state, ECM is in the constant dynamic balance of production and degradation, and MMPs / TIMPs are the most important enzyme groups that affect the degradation of ECM. This article reviews the relationship between MMPs / TIMPs and pulmonary fibrosis.
