很多当代中国人的历史知识仅限于中小学的教育,在那些重意识形态轻历史原本的教科书中,李鸿章的头上的大帽子是“镇压太平天国的刽子手”、“签署《马关条约》的卖国贼”。其实历史上的李鸿章对他那个时代的中国的政治经济内政外交所做的贡献远远超过同时代的任何一个人。梁任公百年前对李鸿章的历史眼光远远超过一些当代中国人对李鸿章的历史认识。梁先生认为:“李鸿章必为数千年中国历史上一人物,无可疑也;李鸿章必为十九世纪世界史上一人物,无可疑也。”
