传统的哥特小说对恐怖的描写基本停留在恐怖环境下发生的可怕的事件所造成的感观刺激的层面上。而美国小说家爱伦·坡的哥特小说除了保持传统哥特特征外,作品的强调重点已从外部世界移到了人物的内心世界。坡向我们揭示:人是恐怖的制造者,恐怖之源在心灵,在于理智的崩溃。
The traditional gothic novels describe the horror basically at the level of sensation caused by the terrible events that occur under the horrific environment. While the American novelist Ellen Poe’s Gothic novels keep the traditional Gothic features, the emphasis of his works has shifted from the outside world to the inner world of characters. The slope reveals to us: Man is the creator of terror, the source of terror lies in the mind, lies in the collapse of reason.
