Chapter 4 Magnesium Magnesium is an important factor in the maintenance of normal muscle contraction and excitability of nerve tissue and is required for many enzymatic catalysis related to energy storage, transfer and utilization. Adult males weighing about 70 kg have a magnesium content of about 2,000 milliequivalents (21 to 28 grams or 1,750 to 2,333 milliequivalents; Widdowson et al., 1951).
